Description

Historical Records relating to the establishment of the cemetery in Southwestern Ray County Missouri known at various times as the Turner and/or Siegel Cemetery. Located in the NE Quarter of Township 52N Range 29W Section 30. The documents in order of appearance are as follows: Land Patent granted to John Turner by the United States Government under the Presidency of James Monroe on June 1, 1824. Document found in Book 10 Pages 602-603 at the Ray County Recorder's Office dated January 1874 in which Thomas Turner (son of John) arranges the sale of the ground while setting aside one-half acre “reserved for grave yard.” John passed away without a will in 1872 leaving his son, Thomas, to make the arrangements to settle the estate. Thomas was acting on behalf of the other heirs Littleton W. Turner, his wife Elizabeth, and James J. Turner. The half acre is again exempted from sale in a Record of Deeds when Jacob Siegel purchased the thirty-nine and one half acres adjoining the cemetery on April 9, 1883, from Benjamin Unger. In February 1917 a Plat (Plat Cabinet A 1-200, Slide 69) was filed with the Ray County Recorder in which Jacob Siegel adds to the West and South borders of the original half acre grave yard (referred to as “Tract “A” Old Cemetary”) bringing the total dimensions of the cemetery to 77 yards by 48 yards, creating an additional 42 lots.
